Sonoran Desert Security User Group (SDSUG) Membership Guidelines

The Sonoran Desert Security User Group (SDSUG) is a practitioner‑first community built on trust, respect, and shared curiosity. These guidelines exist to help us maintain a space where everyone feels welcome, safe, and able to focus on the content and the connections that make this group valuable.

These are not legal rules — those live in our Code of Conduct and Legal Disclaimers. This page contains the community expectations we uphold together.

These have always been the expectations at SDSUG — this is simply the first time we’ve written down the unwritten rules that have guided the group since the beginning.

1. Community Conduct

SDSUG is a space for professionals, practitioners, and students across all backgrounds. We ask members to:

  • avoid disruptive behavior
  • contribute in good faith
  • listen generously
  • support a welcoming environment for everyone in the room
  • treat others with respect

We are a mixed‑experience, mixed‑industry group. What you say and how you show up affects the people around you.

2. Attire and Presentation

We don’t police personal style — SDSUG is not a corporate boardroom. But we do ask members to dress in a way that supports a comfortable, professional environment for all attendees.

Please choose attire that is:

  • appropriate for a professional security meeting
  • not overly revealing or distracting
  • not political
  • not sleepwear
  • respectful of the mixed‑age, mixed‑gender nature of the group

If you’re unsure, think “business‑casual to smart‑casual.” Comfortable, expressive, but still appropriate for a professional setting. Vendor‑branded attire is welcome.

3. Hygiene and Personal Consideration

This is a shared space. To help everyone feel comfortable:

  • avoid strong fragrances (perfume, cologne, body sprays)
  • be mindful of scents that may trigger sensitivities
  • maintain reasonable personal hygiene

This isn’t about judgment — it’s about making the room accessible and comfortable for everyone.

4. Substances, Smoking, and Vaping

SDSUG does not allow smoking or vaping of any kind — including marijuana, nicotine, or flavored vapes — inside event spaces or immediately outside the doors.

This includes:

  • doorways and entry paths
  • hallways
  • indoor areas
  • meeting rooms
  • restrooms

If you need to smoke or vape, please do so off‑premises or in designated outdoor areas provided by the venue.

We don’t police what anyone does outside the event. We do protect the comfort and safety of the people in the room.

5. Respect for the Venue

We partner with organizations who generously host us. Members agree to:

  • avoid disruptive noise or behavior
  • follow venue rules
  • keep food and drink areas tidy
  • respect people and property

Our continued access to these spaces depends on our professionalism.

6. Privacy and Photography

SDSUG is a trust‑based community. Members should:

  • ask before taking photos of individuals or presentation materials
  • avoid photographing badges, screens, or sensitive material
  • respect requests not to be recorded or photographed

Some attendees work in sensitive roles. We honor that.

7. Participation and Engagement

We encourage members to:

  • ask questions
  • contribute without dominating
  • help maintain a positive, collaborative atmosphere
  • share knowledge
  • support newcomers

SDSUG thrives when everyone feels welcome to participate.

8. Alignment With Other Policies

These guidelines work alongside:

Membership implies agreement to all of the above.

9. If Something Feels Off

If you experience or observe behavior that makes the space uncomfortable:

  • speak with an organizer
  • or email us privately

We handle concerns discreetly and respectfully.

SDSUG Membership Guidelines Ethos

These guidelines are not about control. They are about protecting the room — the shared environment where people with clearances, badges, scars, and stories can relax, learn, and connect without distraction or discomfort.

We are a community of adults who show up in good faith to learn, connect, and support one another. These guidelines exist to ensure the environment remains comfortable, respectful, and accessible for everyone.

We don’t judge what anyone does outside the event. Inside the event, we uphold a shared standard so everyone can breathe, focus, and feel welcome.

We are building a neutral space where adults behave like adults. This document simply names the shared expectations that make that possible.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Sonoran Desert Security Users Group (SDSUG) Membership

Can members bring guests?

Yes. Members are welcome to bring guests who are interested in the security community. We simply ask that you keep guest numbers modest and ensure they understand the expectations of the space.

Do I need to be a member to attend?

Yes. SDSUG meetings are for members. This helps us maintain a professional, predictable environment and ensures the room remains practitioner‑focused. Members may bring guests, but we ask that you keep it to a reasonable number so the space remains comfortable for everyone.

Is SDSUG a vendor‑free space?

Yes. SDSUG is practitioner‑first. Vendors are welcome as participants, but meetings are not sales environments. No pitches, no lead‑gen behavior, no marketing agendas. This keeps the space neutral, safe, and comfortable for practitioners.

Who attends SDSUG meetings and events?

SDSUG includes people from many backgrounds, identities, and perspectives. Our neutral environment ensures everyone can participate without pressure to align on non‑security topics. Everyone is welcome here, including those who hold strong viewpoints, as long as they respect that SDSUG is not a space for advocacy or ideological enforcement.

Is SDSUG appropriate for beginners or students?

Yes. SDSUG is practitioner‑first, but not practitioner‑exclusive. Students, early‑career professionals, and newcomers are welcome. The environment is professional but not intimidating, and many attendees are happy to help newcomers navigate the field.

What kind of environment does SDSUG maintain?

SDSUG maintains a neutral, courteous environment where people can focus on security, not social conflict. We do not host ideological debates or enforce political language norms.

What happens if someone makes others uncomfortable?

If someone’s behavior disrupts the environment or makes others uncomfortable, SDSUG leadership may intervene. Most issues are resolved with a quiet conversation. In rare cases, someone may be asked to leave. Our priority is maintaining a safe, comfortable space for everyone.

What kind of behavior is expected?

Adult, respectful, and community‑minded behavior. SDSUG is a professional environment where people come to learn, connect, and share. We expect attendees to be courteous, aware of the room, and mindful of how their behavior affects others.

What should I expect at my first meeting?

A focused, professional environment with a speaker, community updates, and time to connect with other practitioners. Meetings are structured, vendor‑neutral, and designed to be comfortable for both long‑time members and newcomers.

What should I wear to an SDSUG meeting?

Wear what makes you comfortable while still respecting a professional, mixed‑audience environment. Most attendees choose casual or business‑casual attire. No one is expected to dress formally, but clothing should be appropriate for a professional community setting.

Will I be required to use specific pronouns or language?

No. SDSUG does not require attendees to use specific pronouns or adopt any particular terminology. We expect basic courtesy in how people address one another, but we do not police language or force compliance. Our goal is to maintain a neutral, professional, comfortable environment for everyone without turning meetings into ideological or linguistic battlegrounds.

Does SDSUG enforce any political or identity‑based language rules?

No. SDSUG is a practitioner‑focused community. We do not enforce ideological language, and we do not tolerate hostility toward anyone. Courtesy is required; compliance is not. This keeps the space predictable, respectful, and safe for all participants.

What happens if someone prefers different language than another attendee uses?

We handle these situations with common sense. If it’s an honest difference in preference, we expect adults to navigate it respectfully. If someone is intentionally disrespectful or disruptive, leadership may intervene. Our priority is maintaining a calm, neutral, professional environment — not regulating identity or forcing language.

Why does SDSUG emphasize courtesy and neutrality?

Because in many workplaces and professional communities, people still experience the same biases and tensions—they’re just expressed through different language. Posturing and ideological pressure haven’t solved these problems; they’ve simply made interactions more stressful and less authentic. SDSUG takes a different approach: we reduce the noise so people can breathe, be themselves, and work together without the burden of social conflict. A calm, predictable environment helps people collaborate more effectively and treat each other with genuine respect.

Why does SDSUG address these questions when most organizations don’t?

Most organizations avoid talking about the social environment because they fear appearing political or taking sides. The result is unpredictable, tense spaces where people feel they must monitor every word. SDSUG takes a different approach: we set clear, neutral boundaries so people can breathe, be themselves, and focus on security without the burden of ideological conflict. By naming the expectation of courtesy and neutrality upfront, we protect everyone in the room and create the kind of professional environment many people appreciate.
