An overview of SDSUG’s volunteer roles, expectations, and pathways for contributing to the group’s operations, continuity, and community stewardship.
Sonoran Desert Security (SDSUG) is built on stewardship, clarity, and a low‑noise environment where professionals can learn and contribute without distraction. Volunteers play a key role in keeping the community functional, welcoming, and sustainable.
Participation is flexible. Volunteers strengthen the group’s stability, continuity, and community impact. Every role is clearly defined, time‑bounded, and designed for professionals who want to contribute without long‑term obligations.
Volunteering at SDSUG is an opportunity to participate in a mature, neutral, and well‑governed practitioner ecosystem that strengthens regional and national resilience.
Ways to Contribute
SDSUG offers three categories of roles. Each category reflects increasing levels of responsibility, posture, and continuity. All roles are optional, low‑friction, and structured to respect your time.
Intern Roles (Low Time Commitment)
Intern roles are designed for students and early‑career professionals who want to get involved but aren’t ready to take on a full volunteer or steward‑track position. They offer a low‑pressure way to learn how SDSUG operates while contributing in small, meaningful ways.
Interns learn by observing, contributing to small tasks, and working alongside experienced volunteers and stewards. These roles are a safe, low‑pressure way to build confidence, gain experience, and explore future opportunities within SDSUG. Intern roles are designed for students and early‑career professionals who want to get involved without taking on a full volunteer position. These positions are ideal for individuals who want exposure, mentorship, and a clear path into future roles.
SDSUG members take pride in mentoring the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. Interns work alongside experienced volunteers and stewards who enjoy teaching, sharing their experience, and helping newcomers build confidence.

Leadership‑Adjacent Roles (Succession Path)
These roles are for volunteers who demonstrate reliability, clarity, and alignment with SDSUG’s culture. They form the continuity layer that preserves institutional memory. They do not require committees or heavy governance. They exist to maintain continuity and prepare future stewards.

Suggest a Role
SDSUG is a growing community, and we know that people bring skills and interests that may not fit neatly into the roles listed above. If you see a way to contribute that isn’t represented here, we encourage you to propose it. Many of our best ideas come from members who notice a gap, imagine a better experience, or want to apply their strengths in a new way.
Suggested roles should be focused, predictable, and aligned with SDSUG’s culture of clarity, professionalism, and stewardship. Whether it’s a small task, a creative contribution, or a new operational function, we welcome ideas that strengthen the community and improve the experience for everyone.
Expectations
SDSUG expects volunteers to:
- communicate clearly and professionally
- contribute without dominating the environment
- maintain a low‑noise posture
- respect SDSUG’s neutral, vendor‑free, platform-agnostic structure
