Sonoran Desert Security (SDSUG) — Publication and Identifier Standard

SDSUG Implementation of the Hunter Storm Classification System (HSCS) Identifier Standard

Purpose

Sonoran Desert Security (SDSUG) maintains a practitioner-authored research and institutional publication program addressing cybersecurity, governance, critical infrastructure, post-quantum cryptography, regional resilience, and related domains.

This page defines the SDSUG implementation of the Hunter Storm Classification System (HSCS) Identifier Standard.

The purpose is to provide durable identification and consistent publication architecture while preserving SDSUG’s independent institutional identity.

Identifier Structure

SDSUG publications use the general structure:

SDSUG-[SERIES]-[NUMBER]

Examples:

  • SDSUG-CYB-1
  • SDSUG-PQC-1

The series identifies the publication family.

The number identifies the work within that series.

Numbers are natural integers and are not artificially zero-padded.

Publication Series

SDSUG may maintain independent sequences for distinct publication families.

Examples include:

SeriesPublication Domain
CYBCybersecurity and digital threat landscapes
PQCPost-Quantum Cryptography modernization
Additional seriesEstablished as publication requirements evolve

The precise series registry is maintained by SDSUG.

A domain or research focus does not necessarily require a separate publication series. Series should be created when a distinct publication family benefits from independent identity and sequencing.

Research Domains

SDSUG research may be classified across domains including:

  • Critical Infrastructure and Sector Resilience
  • Cross-Border and Geopolitical Risk
  • Cybersecurity and Digital Threat Landscapes
  • Governance, Policy and Institutional Resilience
  • Operational Intelligence and Field Analysis
  • Research Ecosystems and Innovation Mapping
  • Workforce, Education and Capability Development

These domains are classification metadata.

They are not substitutes for publication identifiers.

A publication may belong to multiple domains while retaining one canonical identifier.

Legacy SDSUG Numbering

Earlier SDSUG publications may contain collection-specific or historical report numbers.

Those numbers are not discarded.

During normalization, the existing number is preserved as a legacy identifier, while the publication receives a canonical identifier under the standardized SDSUG namespace.

For example:

Current identifier: SDSUG-CYB-1
Legacy identifier: Cybersecurity 2026 Collection — Report No. 1

The migration records the history of the publication architecture while incorporating the modern classification identifier.

Publication Record

Where applicable, SDSUG publication records should contain:

  • canonical identifier
  • legacy identifier
  • title
  • author
  • publication series
  • research domain
  • publication date
  • edition
  • version
  • status
  • methodology
  • sources and references
  • related works
  • canonical URL
  • revision history

Reports are maintained as living documents where their publication model requires continuing updates.

Versioning and Editions

SDSUG distinguishes between:

Edition — a materially defined publication release, such as a 2026 edition.

Version — a revision of that edition.

Successor work — a new publication that supersedes or substantially replaces an earlier work.

A new edition or successor work should not be confused with a routine webpage update.

The publication record should make these relationships explicit.

Cross-Reference to the Ecosystem Standard

SDSUG follows the Hunter Storm Classification System (HSCS) Identifier Standard.

The master standard establishes the common rules for persistent identity, sequential numbering, legacy identifiers, versioning, provenance, and cross-property interoperability.

Master standard: Hunter Storm Classification System (HSCS) Identifier Standard

SDSUG retains independent authority over its research content, publication decisions, methodology, and institutional records.

Integrity Principle

SDSUG identifiers are designed to remain stable regardless of the eventual size of the research corpus.

Identifiers are assigned, not recalculated.

They are not recycled.

They do not depend upon URL structure, page position, category position, or the number of documents expected to exist in the future.

About Sonoran Desert Security (SDSUG)

Sonoran Desert Security (SDSUG) is Arizona’s longest‑running cybersecurity community and a central institution in the region’s security ecosystem. Established in 2001 and operating continuously for more than 25 years, Sonoran Desert Security (SDSUG) provides practitioner‑led leadership, vendor‑neutral governance, and trusted peer collaboration across the Southwest. Through its annual research, ecosystem mapping, and community programs, Sonoran Desert Security (SDSUG) strengthens regional resilience and serves as a stable anchor for Arizona’s cybersecurity practitioners, organizations, and critical infrastructure partners. Sonoran Desert Security (SDSUG) also publishes independent research used by organizations and policymakers across Arizona, the broader Southwest, and national and international security, technology, and governance communities.
